Should You Replace Your Sunglasses?

Should You Replace Your Sunglasses? Advice from our Optometrists in Elko

When it comes to protecting your eyes, you will definitely want to take advantage of sunglasses when going out in the sun. Fortunately, there are several types of sunglasses you can invest in to protect your eyes. Take for example glasses that have transitioning lenses, meaning they darken when you go out in the sun. Protective glasses are an excellent way to not only protect your eyes from the sun, but also the skin around your eyes, which can go a long way in helping to prevent wrinkles. For now, though, let's take a closer look at sunglasses and knowing when to replace them.

Does UV Protection Wear Down?

There was a study conducted recently in Brazil that showed how sunglasses react through wear and tear. The study pinpointed the fact that even normal wear and tear can lessen the glasses ability to protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays. Essentially, this means that sunglasses and eyeglasses with UV protection can have reduced efficacy after a certain period of time. The amount of wear and tear, however, is what determines when you should replace them. The more wear and tear, the sooner they will expire.

When To Buy New Sunglasses?

For maximum UV protection from your sunglasses, you should invest in a new pair every year, since normal wear and tear will wear out the anti-UV coatings of your glasses. You can, however, extend the life of your glasses if you take special precaution to protect the lenses. For example, every time you take off your glasses, make sure you put them in a case rather than throwing them in your purse or pocket.
