What Is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)?

AMD is very common in people over the age of 50. When a person suffers from this condition, it means that his or her macula has damage to it, which impairs the person's ability to maintain sharp and clear vision. In many people who have AMD, the vision loss occurrence that takes place is so slow that they don't notice it for many years. However, for others, the vision loss process may happen very quickly. It is also not uncommon for those with AMD to view colors differently. In fact, some people with this disease state that as it progresses, colors no longer look as bright as they once did.

There are several factors that influence a person's likelihood of suffering from AMD, with the three most pertinent being:

  • Race
  • Smoking habits
  • Family history/genetics

How Is AMD Treated?

AMD is diagnosed through the use of several tests, including a dilated eye exam, optical coherence tomography, visual acuity test, and fluorescein angiogram. The treatment method that is best for AMD will depend on what stage a person is in:

  • Early AMD: no current treatment methods
  • Intermediate AMD: taking certain supplements
  • Late AMD: Injections, laser surgery, or photodynamic therapy
