OCT Exam and Zeiss Cirrus OCT 5000 Machine

Total Eyecare Clinic is proud to offer our clients the benefits of the Zeiss Cirrus OCT 5000, a state-of-the-art device that performs optical coherence tomography (OCT) tests to detect early signs of potentially serious eye diseases.

What is Optical Coherence Tomography?

OCT is an imaging test utilizing light waves that capture and process cross-section images of your eye, specifically the retina. At the back of your eyes are light-sensitive tissue linings that readily absorb light waves to produce a detailed kind of "map" that allows optometrists to measure retina thickness. According to the density of anterior eye tissues and presence of other abnormalities, our eye doctors can detect, diagnose and treat retinal diseases before they have a chance to progress into advanced stages.

Configured with the highest resolution and visualization capabilities available in an OCT imaging device, the Zeiss Cirrus OCT 5000 also applies clinical applications to track retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) integrity as well as analysis of optical ganglion cells to determine glaucomatous damage in the macula.

The Zeiss Cirrus OCT 5000 is most useful for diagnosing numerous, asymptomatic eye conditions that include:

  • Diabetic eye disease (diabetic retinopathy)
  • Glaucoma
  • Age-related macular degeneration
  • Macular edema
  • Central serious retinopathy

Since macular degeneration and glaucoma are "age-related" diseases, they usually progress without causing discernible symptoms. Visual impairment happens so gradually that patients are not aware they may be suffering from one of these progressive eye diseases. Examining your eyes with the Zeiss Cirrus OCT 5000 will help detect eye problems before they become difficult or impossible to treat.

What to Expect During an OCT Eye Exam

You are seated in front of the OCT machine and asked to rest your chin on the chin rest. While keeping your head motionless, the Cirrus OCT 5000 then scans your eyes without touching your eyelids or eye surfaces. The entire scanning process takes less than 15 minutes.

How Does the Zeiss Cirrus OCT 5000 Differ from Retinal Photography?

Retinal photography is capable of capturing images of the visible surfaces at the back of the eye, which only allows an eye doctor to view superficial changes to the eye. With the Cirrus OCT 50000 machine, we can detect anomalies within tissue layers composing your retina that would not be as apparent using retinal photography. By identifying faint alterations in the thickness and vascularity of retina tissue, we can begin to treat serious eye diseases two to three years earlier than if conventional ophthalmological devices had been used.

If you are over 35, have a family history of eye disorders, suffer health issues that may negatively affect your eyes, or are at risk for suffering macular degeneration or glaucoma, ask our doctors if you are a candidate for an OCT exam using our new Zeiss Cirrus OCT 5000.
