Eye Injuries at Work

When you work with certain materials and equipment, such as welding, your eyes are at risk of being injured. This can result in the need for emergency care in order to protection your vision. Making sure that you wear protective eyewear that is certified and approved helps reduce this risk. Your workplace should provide this eyewear for all employees who are at risk.

Eye Strain at Work

The other major eye problem that can affect you on the job is eye strain. Working on computers and staring at screens for hours each day puts a significant amount of strain on your eyes and vision. You might experience eye irritation, redness, headaches and other symptoms when you are straining your eyes at work.

You can prevent eye strain on the job by getting into the habit of looking away from your computer, laptop, tablet or phone screen from time to time. You should give your eyes a rest every 20 minutes in order to lower your risk of straining your eyes. Plan on looking at an object about 20 feet away from you for about 20 seconds when you glance away from your screen. Other ways to prevent eye strain at work include blinking more often while looking at screens and reducing glare on your screen. Having your eyes checked for underlying problems that might contribute to eye strain is also important. These routine exams also ensure that your eye prescriptions for corrective lenses are up-to-date.
