Frequently Asked Questions About LASIK Eye Surgery
Are you considering LASIK eye surgery to correct your vision? Our optometrists can evaluate your eyes to determine if you are a good candidate, answer your questions and refer you to an eye surgeon.
What is LASIK eye surgery?
LASIK is an acronym for Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, which involves reshaping the cornea in order to help light focus correctly on the back of your eye. During the procedure, the eye surgeon will remove sections of your cornea, according to your specific prescription. The eye surgery is often performed on an outpatient basis.
Who is a good candidate for laser eye surgery?
Good candidates for laser eye surgery are those who are nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism. The individual's corneal thickness will need to be measured because sections of the cornea will be removed. Individuals with thin corneas may not be good candidates. Laser eye surgery usually results in very few serious complications and most people achieve 20/25 vision or better.
How long is the recovery for laser vision correction surgery?
The actual eye surgery only takes about 15 minutes. Though, you can expect to be at the eye surgery center for about two hours. After the surgery, you will be allowed to go home and recover. You should have a follow-up appointment the next day with the eye surgeon or a qualified optometrist. Most individuals can resume their daily activities, including driving the day after their surgery. However, full vision correction may take a few weeks to a few months. During this time, you will have several follow-up appointments with our optometrist to check your vision and eye health.
